Sometimes known as black henna from the plant Indigofera Tinctoria (not to be confused with commercial black henna that contains harsh chemicals, the two are very different). True Indigo produce a natural blue dye and does not give any other colour. Henna produce a natural orange-red hair dye and indigo blue. Together, henna indigo powder can produce any shade of brown hair and black hair color and is the alternative brown/black beard dye for men with sensitive skin and itchy beard as henna powder will help to relieve itchiness and dry scalp with frequent use. Henna naturally soften and relax hair whilst indigo provides thickness and volume.

AMLA + INDIGO + HENNA

Always use amla powder with indigo powder for softness, conditioning and easy application, especially for first time use. Amla powder can also be used with henna to tone down the red in henna for a softer red brown colour. However, all the hair powders in the range can be mixed in with henna but only amla with indigo as it is a much weaker hair dye.

How much henna to use for hair length? (Please note this is approximate and is dependent on length and thickness of hair i.e. short cropped hair or beard can get away with using less than 50g).

How to Use Indigo Powder

1. Prepare the Henna Mixture First

Let the henna sit for the recommended time to release its dye. Only after the henna mixture has matured should you proceed with preparing the indigo paste.

2. Use High-Quality Indigo Powder

To ensure the best results, it is crucial to use high-quality indigo powder. Look for reputable brands or suppliers that offer pure indigo powder without any adulterants or additives. Using quality indigo powder will enhance the color payoff and minimize the risk of hair damage.

3. Mix Indigo Powder with Warm Water

To create the indigo paste, mix the indigo powder with warm water to form a smooth, thick consistency. The warm water helps activate the dye release process. Allow the indigo paste to sit for approximately 10-15 minutes to ensure proper dye release before applying it to your hair.

4. Apply Indigo Paste on Clean, Damp Hair

For optimal absorption and coverage, apply the indigo paste to clean, damp hair. Remove any residual henna paste if you have previously applied henna. The dampness of the hair helps the indigo pigment penetrate the hair shaft effectively.

5. Leave the Indigo Paste on Hair for the Recommended Time

The recommended time to leave the indigo paste on the hair may vary depending on the desired color intensity and the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer. Typically, it ranges from 30 minutes to a few hours. Follow the instructions carefully and avoid leaving the indigo paste on for longer than recommended to prevent over-darkening.

6. Rinse Hair Thoroughly and Avoid Shampooing Immediately

After the recommended processing time, rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Avoid using shampoo immediately after rinsing, as it may strip away some of the indigo color. Wait for at least 24-48 hours before shampooing to allow the color to fully develop and adhere to the hair.

7. Be Patient with Color Development

Unlike chemical hair dyes that provide instant results, indigo powder takes some time for the color to develop fully. The color may appear brighter initially but will darken over the next 24-48 hours. Allow the color to settle before making any judgments or considering additional color applications.
